Inspiration

The Driftstone Alabaster Wall Sconce started with a stone picked up from a riverbed: a small cylinder worn smooth on every side, the kind you turn over in your hand and put in your pocket. A short cylinder of Spanish alabaster is cut to that shape, open at the bottom, and capped with a brass disc. A round brass backplate holds a stubby arm that ends in a ball joint locked by a knurled thumbscrew, and the shade hangs from it like a stone on a hook. Lit, the alabaster turns milk-white with faint grey veins, the same way a wet river stone shows its markings when held up to the light.

Where does the light go?

The cylinder is open at the bottom, so most light drops straight down the wall, while the alabaster itself glows softly on all sides. It works as ambient light beside a mirror, not as a reading spot.

How high should it sit beside a bathroom mirror?

Mount the center of the shade at about 150–165cm/59–65″, roughly eye level, and keep the wall box at least 8cm/3″ clear of the mirror edge so the 18cm/7.1″ width has room.

Why does the veining on mine look different from the photo?

Spanish alabaster is a natural stone, so the grey veins and cloudiness vary from block to block. No two shades are identical.

What bulb fits inside?

The socket is E26 or E27, and one warm-light bulb is included. Replace it with a standard-size A19 LED, not a large globe, so it stays inside the 18cm/7.1″ shade.

The Craft

From a block of stone
to light in your room.

Alabaster can't be moulded or mass-pressed — it is cut. Every shade starts as solid stone and is worked by hand until it's thin enough to glow evenly. That's why no two are the same.

Quarried

Blocks of natural alabaster are extracted and graded for translucency and the quality of their veining before any cutting begins.

Cut & shaped

Each block is sliced and turned or carved to form, then hollowed so a bulb can sit behind the stone wall.

Hand-finished

The walls are sanded to an even thickness so light passes through without dark patches, then polished by hand.

Wired & assembled

Fitted with brass hardware and wired to a 120V, safety-certified build, then inspected before it ships.

Is alabaster lighting durable, or does the stone chip easily?

Alabaster is a solid, fine-grained stone with real weight — not fragile in normal use. It is softer than marble, so avoid knocks and harsh chemical cleaners. A soft, dry cloth keeps it looking right for years.

Will my alabaster fixture look exactly like the photo?

No — and that's by design. Each shade is cut from natural stone, so the veining and tone are unique to your piece. The product photo shows a representative example; yours will have its own distinct veining.

What bulb and colour temperature work best with alabaster?

Use a 2700K warm-white LED to bring out the honeyed, candle-like tone in the stone. Cooler bulbs make alabaster look gray. Most fixtures take an E26 or G9 base — check the product page — and dim with a compatible LED dimmer.

Which alabaster fixture should I choose for my room size?
