Inspiration

The swing arm is borrowed from the workshop — drafting lamps and machine lights, where the whole point was moving the light to the work rather than the work to the light. Brought to a bedside, that mechanism needed softening: a pleated fabric shade instead of a metal reflector, and a turned wood collar at the joint so the pivot reads as a detail rather than as hardware. What's left is a working arm that doesn't look like equipment.

FAQ

How high should I mount it beside a bed?

For reading in bed, aim for the bottom of the shade roughly 20–24″ above the mattress top, which usually puts the backplate around 40–48″ off the floor. Mount it a little further out from the pillow than feels natural — the arm swings in, so you want room to pull the light toward you rather than having it start over your head. For a pair flanking a bed, set both backplates at the same height and equal distance from the headboard edge.

Can I dim it?

Not as supplied — the cord switch is simple on/off. Because it's plug-in, you can add dimming yourself: an inline or outlet plug-in dimmer between the plug and the socket, paired with a dimmable bulb. A hardwired wall dimmer won't control it, since the fixture isn't on the wall circuit.

How do I deal with the visible cord?

The cord is part of the design of any plug-in sconce, but it doesn't have to be conspicuous. Run it straight down from the backplate to the skirting rather than diagonally, use a paintable cord cover if the wall is a plain colour, and hide the excess behind the nightstand or headboard. Plan the mount point relative to the outlet before drilling — the 59″ cord has to reach without pulling on the backplate.
