Inspiration

Before crates and cardboard, fragile things were bound in rope — demijohns and glass floats wrapped in cord that followed the curve of the vessel and knotted where it was widest. The Marova takes that logic and puts it on a lampshade: jute ribs run pole to pole over stretched linen, tied off with a small X at the equator. The shade is oval rather than round for the same reason the originals were, because rope wants to follow a bulge.

FAQ

One pendant or a cluster?

The medium stands alone over a four- to six-seat table or a standard island. The small is better multiplied — three to five in a row over a long table, spaced 24–30″ apart centre to centre and all set to the same drop, reads deliberately layered where a single small shade would look undersized. A single small one still works at a bedside or in a powder room.

Are the jute ribs and knots real?

Real jute rope, tied by hand, not a printed pattern. Because of that, rib spacing, knot tightness, and rope thickness differ slightly between shades. New jute also smells faintly grassy for a few days and sheds a little loose fibre in the first weeks, then settles — neither is a fault.

How do I clean linen and jute together?

They need different handling, which is the main thing to know. The linen takes a soft brush or a vacuum upholstery attachment on low, and a barely damp cloth with mild soap for a mark — test on an inside seam first. The jute takes a dry brush only; moisture darkens the fibre and can leave a tidemark along a rib that won't come out. Kill the circuit at the breaker before working on either.
