The Calveris Floor Lamp started from a reading chair that sat too far from any table. A lamp standing beside it always put the light behind the shoulder, which is the one place it is no use; what was wanted was a lamp that could stand clear of the chair and lean its head out over it instead. So the post stays upright and a long arm swings off the top, the way a boom lamp does, with a wood grip at the joint to set the angle by hand. The shade stayed the pleated, scallop-hemmed kind from an old parlor table lamp rather than anything that looks like equipment. The wood at the foot and the joint was chosen to sit next to a chair, not beside a desk.
