Inspiration

The Cottavie Pendant Lamp started from the woven raffia sun hats and market baskets of Mediterranean summer villages, and from the scalloped awnings over old cottage shop windows. We gave the shade a ring of rounded petal panels, each edged in a darker band so the shape reads clearly from across the room, and topped it with a turned wooden finial like the knob on an old bedpost. Lit, the raffia weave glows a warm straw color and the light falls in a soft circle below.

FAQ

Which size should I choose?

Small 40cm/15.7″ suits a breakfast nook, bedroom or a pair over a kitchen island. Medium 50cm/19.7″ fits over a round or 4–6 seat dining table. Large 60cm/23.6″ works over a larger dining table or as the main light in a living room.

How high should I hang it?

Over a dining table or island, hang the bottom of the shade about 75–90cm/30–36″ above the surface; the cord adjusts up to 150cm/59″. In a walkway or entryway, keep at least 2.1m/7ft of clearance below.

What kind of light does it give?

Warm, filtered light. The raffia weave glows a straw color and lets light through in a soft texture, with most light falling down through the open bottom. Use an E26 or E27 LED bulb at 3000K; LED keeps the raffia cool.

How do I care for the raffia shade?

Dust it with a soft brush or a vacuum on low with a brush attachment. Keep it away from moisture, and note that natural raffia varies slightly in weave and tone from shade to shade.
