Blown glass keeps a record of how it was made. The Tobia leaves that record visible: the swirl running through the sphere is the motion of the gather itself, held still as the glass cooled. Tinting it lightly rather than fully was the second decision — colour thin enough to read as a wash of blue, pink, or yellow when the lamp is off, and thin enough to still pass warm light when it's on. A slim cord and a small chrome cap keep everything else out of the way.

A single bulb behind tinted glass gives ambient light rather than task light, which makes the Tobia a good bedside or entry pendant and a reason to add under-cabinet lighting if you run it over a work surface. Over a table, hang the bottom of the sphere 30–36″ above the surface; over a bedside table, drop it so the glass sits roughly at seated eye level or above, since the swirl is most visible from the side.

The small size is the one to multiply — two or three in a row over an island read better than one undersized sphere. The large works alone. Because the tint is light, all three colours sit comfortably with white walls, oak, and brushed metal; the yellow leans warmest, the blue coolest, and a dimmer widens the range of all three.
