Inspiration

Paper lanterns have always been made to be looked through rather than at. This one keeps that logic and adds a hand: loose brushstrokes laid across the rice paper in soft pastels and earth tones, drawn on the flat sheet before the sphere takes shape, so the marks stretch and bend with the curve. Built in layered panels rather than one skin, the lantern holds a rounder silhouette and throws a softer, more even glow — traditional construction, a painter's finish.

Key Features

Layered Rice Paper Shade
Built from overlapping paper panels rather than a single skin, which holds the round silhouette and spreads light more evenly through the surface.
Hand-Painted Brushwork
Abstract strokes applied by hand in soft pastels and earth tones — visible as pattern by day, dissolving into the glow when lit.
Sloped Ceiling Ready
The canopy handles slopes up to 30°, and the 59″ cord shortens at install to whatever drop the room needs.

Specifications

Fixture Type
Hardwired cord pendant · layered paper lantern shade
Materials & Finish
Rice paper shade on a metal frame, hand-painted. Single colorway — black brushwork together with pastel and earth-tone strokes on natural paper. The painting is applied by hand, so stroke placement differs on every shade.
Light Source
1 × E26 or E27 medium screw socket · 40W incandescent or LED equivalent max · warm white 3000K LED bulb included · LED recommended, since paper shades want cool-running bulbs
Cord
59″ / 150 cm as supplied · adjustable and shortenable at install
Mounting
Hardwired to a standard ceiling junction box · sloped ceilings up to 30° · licensed electrician recommended
Power
AC 110–240V · dimmable with a compatible wall dimmer and dimmable bulb (dimmer not included)
Rating
Indoor dry locations only · not for bathrooms, kitchens with heavy cooking steam, or covered outdoor areas
Care
Dust with a dry soft brush or a hair dryer on cool, low. Never use water or any cleaner — paper stains permanently and the painted strokes can lift. Handle by the frame, not the paper.

Use Case

At 21.6″ across and nearly 23″ tall, this is a single-fixture piece — a dining table, a stair void, a corner of a living room, or a bedroom where it can hang low without being brushed past. Over a table, keep the bottom of the shade 30–36″ above the surface. In open floor space, allow at least 7 ft of clearance: paper dents easily and doesn't spring back.

One bulb behind paper gives ambient light, so pair it with lamps or recessed cans anywhere real reading or prep happens. The lantern suits rooms with plaster or white walls, pale wood, and low-contrast textiles, where the brushwork can be the only pattern in the room. On a dimmer the painted strokes soften and the whole sphere reads as a single warm shape. For trade pricing or project quantities, email info@docos.us.

FAQ

Will the painted pattern match the photos?
No — and that's the point of hand-painted work. Stroke placement, thickness, and the balance of colours differ on every shade, so yours will be recognisably the same design but not an identical copy. If you need a close match to a specific photographed piece, email us before ordering and we'll check what's in stock.
How durable is a paper shade, and what should I avoid?
Indoors and dry, rice paper on a metal frame lasts for years. The two real risks are moisture and impact: humidity makes paper cockle and can lift the paint, and a knock leaves a dent or tear that can't be smoothed out. Keep it out of bathrooms and steamy kitchens, hang it clear of walkways and door swings, and handle it by the frame when changing a bulb.
Can it go on a sloped ceiling?
Yes, up to a 30° slope. Beyond that the canopy can't sit flush and the cord won't hang true. On a slope, measure the drop from the low side of the ceiling as well as the high side — a 23″-tall shade ends up closer to head height than the nominal measurement suggests.

Why Akari

Why the Akari Series feels different

Four reasons these lanterns keep showing up in homes that take lighting seriously.

Soft, diffused glow

Washi paper filters light into a warm wash. No harsh hotspots, no cold edges — just gentle ambient light across the whole room.

Handcrafted paper texture

Every shade is shaped and pressed by hand. Fiber lines, soft folds, and small irregularities you can actually see when it's lit.

Sculptural, nearly weightless

Strong silhouette, light visual footprint. Real presence in a room without crowding what's already there.

Styles with anything

Warm enough for mid-century, quiet enough for minimalist, soft enough to anchor a modern dining table.

Craft & Material

Paper that was made to hold light

Washi paper is thin, strong, and slightly translucent — which is exactly what a good shade needs. Light passes through the fiber instead of bouncing off it, so the glow lands soft and even. Every shade is hand-shaped over a wire frame, which means no two are identical. The small variations on the surface aren't defects — they're the difference between a handmade lantern and a printed one.

Heritage

The Art of Xuan Paper Making: A Thousand Years of Craftsmanship

Washi, traditional Japanese paper, is crafted from the inner barks of plants like kozo, mitsumata, and gampi. The process involves carefully stripping, boiling, and pounding the fibers into pulp, which is then spread onto bamboo mesh to form delicate sheets. Known for its strength, translucency, and soft texture, washi has been a vital part of Japanese culture for centuries — seen in origami, lanterns, and sliding doors, embodying the nation's enduring artistry and grace.

Where Akari lights belong

These aren't fixtures you hide. They're pieces you place — and every room has a spot that opens up with one of them in it.

Over the dining table

Hang a pendant low. The paper warms the room the moment you switch it on — the kind of light people stay under longer.

In the bedroom

A floor lantern in the corner replaces the overhead. Walls soften, the room calms, and the last hour of the day feels slower.

What owners are saying

★★★★★

"Bought the floor lantern for our bedroom and it completely changed the evening vibe. We never turn the overhead on anymore. Warm, but not yellow — if that makes sense."

"I was looking for a dining pendant that didn't feel cold or too 'designer.' This one actually pulls the table together. Guests always ask where it's from."

Mark T.

Interior Lover · Verified

★★★★★

"The paper texture is better in person than in photos — you can see the fiber when it's lit. Arrived well-packed and easy to assemble."
