Inspiration

The Valtherin Alabaster Pendant Lamp is a Regency hall lantern carved from stone. The body is a Spanish alabaster urn — flared lip, rounded shoulder, tapering to a brass acorn finial — hung from three brass chains on scrolled hooks, the way glass hall lanterns were slung in English townhouses of the 1800s, with a center rod carrying the wire down from a round canopy. Lit from within, the whole urn glows cloud-white with amber veins and throws light up onto the ceiling, which is why this alabaster urn pendant light with brass chains was designed for an entry hall, stairwell, or bedroom in traditional, Regency, and organic-modern homes.

Where does a 40cm urn pendant work best?

As a single light in an entry hall or stairwell up to about 3 × 3m/10 × 10 ft, or centered in a bedroom. Over a round table it suits 100–120cm/40–48″.

Where does the light go?

The urn is open at the top, so the bulb washes the ceiling; the alabaster is translucent, so the body glows softly all round. It reads as ambient light rather than a downlight.

Is the urn stone or glass?

Spanish alabaster, carved and hollowed as one piece. Cloud pattern and vein color vary, so each urn is slightly different.

How do I change the bulb?

Reach in through the open top of the urn; the E26 socket sits inside on the center rod, so nothing needs to be unhooked.

The Craft

From a block of stone
to light in your room.

Alabaster can't be moulded or mass-pressed — it is cut. Every shade starts as solid stone and is worked by hand until it's thin enough to glow evenly. That's why no two are the same.

Quarried

Blocks of natural alabaster are extracted and graded for translucency and the quality of their veining before any cutting begins.

Cut & shaped

Each block is sliced and turned or carved to form, then hollowed so a bulb can sit behind the stone wall.

Hand-finished

The walls are sanded to an even thickness so light passes through without dark patches, then polished by hand.

Wired & assembled

Fitted with brass hardware and wired to a 120V, safety-certified build, then inspected before it ships.

Is alabaster lighting durable, or does the stone chip easily?

Alabaster is a solid, fine-grained stone with real weight — not fragile in normal use. It is softer than marble, so avoid knocks and harsh chemical cleaners. A soft, dry cloth keeps it looking right for years.

Will my alabaster fixture look exactly like the photo?

No — and that's by design. Each shade is cut from natural stone, so the veining and tone are unique to your piece. The product photo shows a representative example; yours will have its own distinct veining.

What bulb and colour temperature work best with alabaster?

Use a 2700K warm-white LED to bring out the honeyed, candle-like tone in the stone. Cooler bulbs make alabaster look gray. Most fixtures take an E26 or G9 base — check the product page — and dim with a compatible LED dimmer.
