Inspiration

The Vena Alabaster Wall Sconce takes its shade from a bellflower turned upside down. A thin cap of Spanish alabaster is carved into a wide, wavy skirt with six soft folds around the hem, the way the early pressed-glass shades on farmhouse kitchen lights were shaped, and a brass dome closes the top. A straight brass arm carries it out from a round plate, with a small pin joint where the arm meets the shade cap, and a beaded pull chain ends in a brass ball. The stone is veined rather than cloudy, streaked with grey and rust lines that show clearly once the bulb is on, which is where the name comes from.

Which bulb looks right in the open shade?

The bulb hangs below the hem, so it is part of the look. A warm-light bulb is included; a G25 globe or a clear Edison-style E26 LED suits the shape best.

Do I need a wall switch?

No. The pull chain switches the sconce at the fixture, so it can run from an unswitched box; it also works on a switched circuit.

Where does the light go?

With the shade open at the bottom, most light falls downward onto a counter, sink, or nightstand, while the thin alabaster glows and shows its veins from the side.

Why do the veins on mine look different?

Spanish alabaster is natural stone; the grey and rust streaks run differently through every block, so no two shades match.

The Craft

From a block of stone
to light in your room.

Alabaster can't be moulded or mass-pressed — it is cut. Every shade starts as solid stone and is worked by hand until it's thin enough to glow evenly. That's why no two are the same.

Quarried

Blocks of natural alabaster are extracted and graded for translucency and the quality of their veining before any cutting begins.

Cut & shaped

Each block is sliced and turned or carved to form, then hollowed so a bulb can sit behind the stone wall.

Hand-finished

The walls are sanded to an even thickness so light passes through without dark patches, then polished by hand.

Wired & assembled

Fitted with brass hardware and wired to a 120V, safety-certified build, then inspected before it ships.

Is alabaster lighting durable, or does the stone chip easily?

Alabaster is a solid, fine-grained stone with real weight — not fragile in normal use. It is softer than marble, so avoid knocks and harsh chemical cleaners. A soft, dry cloth keeps it looking right for years.

Will my alabaster fixture look exactly like the photo?

No — and that's by design. Each shade is cut from natural stone, so the veining and tone are unique to your piece. The product photo shows a representative example; yours will have its own distinct veining.

What bulb and colour temperature work best with alabaster?

Use a 2700K warm-white LED to bring out the honeyed, candle-like tone in the stone. Cooler bulbs make alabaster look gray. Most fixtures take an E26 or G9 base — check the product page — and dim with a compatible LED dimmer.

Which alabaster fixture should I choose for my room size?
