Inspiration

The Tavermere Swing Arm Wall Sconce started from the reading lamps in old ship cabins, mounted on a wooden plate beside each bunk with a folding arm that swung out to read by and tucked back against the wall afterward. We kept the folding arm and the small wooden plate, and gave it a shade made of rounds of shell, the way coastal houses once used shell in place of window glass. The joints stay visible, the way they were on those cabin lamps. Lit, the shell softens the bulb into a pearly glow over the page.

FAQ
How far does the arm adjust?
The arm has three joints. At the wall it swings 180° side to side and 180° up and down. The elbow folds 180°. At the shade it tilts 180° (90° on the dome style) and swivels 350°. Unfolded, the two arms measure 27cm + 26cm (10.6″ + 10.2″), or 27cm + 23cm on the dome style.
Which shade style should I choose?
The A tapered drum is the deepest at 18cm/7.1″ and keeps the bulb most hidden. The B cone opens wider at the bottom and spreads light further down. The C dome is the shallowest at 12.5cm/4.9″ and has a brass cap at the top.
Is a bulb included?
Yes. Each sconce comes with an E26 or E27 bulb in warm 3000K light.
How do I turn it on?
Pull the 30cm/11.8″ chain hanging below the walnut backplate to switch the light on and off.

The capiz shell collection

Natural Shell, Sculpted by Light

Capiz is a paper-thin shell from the coastal waters of the Philippines. Cut, layered and assembled by hand, it turns an ordinary bulb into a soft, pearly glow that feels calm in any room.

The material

Beauty Written by Nature

Capiz comes from the windowpane oyster, a flat shellfish whose shell is so thin and clear that it was once used in place of glass in Philippine windows. That same quality is what makes it so good at holding light.

Translucent

Light passes through the shell rather than bouncing off it, so the whole surface glows.

Pearlescent

A quiet mother-of-pearl sheen shifts gently as you move around the room.

Featherlight

Even large shades stay light, so they hang and move easily without bulky hardware.

Organic

A natural material with real growth lines, never a printed or molded imitation.

The structure

Layered for Depth & Dimension

A capiz shade is built from many small pieces rather than one sheet. Where the shells overlap, the light softens; where they sit alone, it shines a little brighter. That play between layers gives the shade depth you can see from across the room.

  • Single layer

The brightest areas, showing the shell's natural grain most clearly.

  • Overlapping layers

Shells placed edge over edge create soft, scale-like tones across the surface.

  • Built-up form

Pieces are joined over a frame or strung into tiers to shape the final silhouette.

Lights off, lights on

Beautiful, Day or Night

Capiz is a decorative piece in its own right. It doesn't wait for the evening to look finished.

Daytime · light off

Soft texture by day

Switched off, the shells read as a calm, pearly white with natural ridges, like a sculpture catching window light.

Evening · light on

Warm glow by night

Switched on, each shell turns a warm honey tone and the overlaps come alive with gentle light and shadow.

The craft

Made by Hand, Piece by Piece

There is no machine that can lay a capiz shade. Every piece passes through skilled hands before it reaches yours.

  1. Clean and select

Shells are washed and sorted by tone and thickness so each light looks balanced.

  2. Soften and flatten

The shells are pressed flat, ready to be cut cleanly without cracking.

  3. Cut to shape

Each piece is cut by hand into discs, squares or petals depending on the design.

  4. Assemble

Pieces are joined, overlapped or strung one at a time around the frame.

  5. Inspect and finish

Every light is checked for spacing, balance and secure fittings before it ships.

Natural variation

Naturally One of a Kind

Because each shell grew in the sea, no two are exactly alike. Expect gentle differences in tone, grain and edge from piece to piece and from one light to the next.

  • Milk white
  • Soft ivory
  • Pearl grey
  • Warm honey
  • Fine growth lines

Signs of a real shell, not flaws: faint growth rings, slight color shifts, small irregular edges and tiny natural marks. These details are what separate natural capiz from plastic look-alikes. Care: dust with a soft dry cloth or feather duster with the power off. Keep away from water, steam and cleaning sprays, which can cloud or warp the shell.

The light

A Softer Kind of Light

Capiz filters light instead of blocking it. The result is a glow that is easy on the eyes and flattering to the room.

Diffused, not harsh

The shell spreads the light across its whole surface, so you see a glow rather than a bright bulb.

Gentle patterns

Light slipping between the pieces can trace soft shapes across nearby walls and ceilings.

Warm by nature

The shell's ivory tone adds warmth, giving evenings a relaxed, candle-like mood.

Bulb tip: choose a warm white bulb around 2700K–3000K. A frosted or opal bulb avoids a visible hot spot through thinner shells, and a dimmable bulb with a compatible dimmer lets you lower the glow for evening.

Interior styles

Naturally Versatile

Its quiet color and organic texture let capiz settle into very different interiors without taking over. Choose a style to see it in a room.
