Inspiration

The Torvella Pendant Lamp is the conical field hat worn across the rice terraces of Southeast Asia, hung from a cord. The shade is built the same way those hats are: a single length of rattan cane wound round and round from the point to the brim, each coil sitting tight on the one below, so the surface is a set of fine horizontal ridges from top to bottom. Where a hat would have its chin tie there is a turned walnut plug at the peak, and a twisted brown cloth cord runs up from it. Lit from inside, the cane turns amber and the coils show as light and dark bands, with the strongest light spilling straight down from the wide open mouth.

Which size for my table or island?

40cm in a row of two or three over an island or for a small breakfast table; 50cm alone over a 4-seat table; 60cm over a 6-seat table or as the single light in a dining room.

How high should it hang?

Set the rim about 75–85cm/30–34″ above the table so the wide cone shields the bulb from seated eyes; shorten the 150cm/59″ cord inside the canopy at install.

Where does the light go?

Most light falls straight down through the open mouth onto the table, and the rattan glows amber from the side. Table light, not whole-room light.

Which bulb looks right?

A warm-light bulb is included. For replacements use an E26 or E27 LED, A19 or G25 globe, 2700–3000K, so the cane keeps its warm color; avoid cool-white.
