Inspiration

The Delmare Pendant Lamp is a silk lantern rigged like a hot-air balloon. The shade is white satin stretched over an iron frame in the shape of an old paper lantern, wide at the middle with the brim turned up at the edge, and every rib of the frame is covered with a strip of dark red piping so the seams show as lines from the crown to the rim, the way the panels of a balloon are stitched. Instead of a single rod, a bundle of black cords fans out from a knot above the crown and ties to the rim at several points, the way rigging lines run from a balloon to its basket. Lit, the satin glows a warm ivory and the red lines stay dark against it.

Which size for my room?

Where does the light go?

The satin is translucent, so the whole shade glows in every direction and the open bottom drops extra light onto the table. Ambient light for a room, not a spot.

How high should it hang?

Over a table set the bottom of the shade about 75–85cm/30–34″ above the top; in an open room keep it 210cm/83″ or more off the floor. The 150cm/59″ cord is shortened inside the canopy at install.

Which bulbs should I use?
