Inspiration

The Olivienne Pendant Lamp started from the edge of a cotton shawl — a row of tassels tied along the hem, with wood beads threaded above the knots to hold each one its own distance from the next. Thrown over the back of a chair, the hem doubled on itself so the tassels fell in two overlapping ranks, and the light coming past them broke into soft vertical stripes on the floor. That doubling was the part worth building: one row of tassels is trim, two rows is a shade. So the hem was closed into a ring, and the beads were kept exactly where they had been, doing the same job of spacing.

Beaded Rim on an Iron Ring
Wood beads are strung along the top rim of the ring, setting the gap between tassels and finishing the edge you see from below.
Open Top and Open Bottom
Light washes up through the open ring onto the ceiling and falls straight down through the open base, with stripes between the tassels.

Which size should I choose?
Over a table, the shade wants to be about half the table width: Dia 50cm/19.7″ suits a round table of roughly 90–110cm/36–44″, and Dia 60cm/23.6″ suits 110–140cm/44–55″. In a bedroom or nursery where it hangs in open space rather than over furniture, the Large reads better from across the room.
How does the light come through?
The ring is open at the top and the base, so light washes up onto the ceiling and drops straight down beneath the fixture, while the gaps between the tassels throw soft vertical stripes onto the nearby walls. It works as ambient light over a table or bed rather than focused task light.
How low does it hang?
The shade is 26cm/10.2″ deep on a 150cm/59″ cord that is cut to length at installation. Over a dining table, leave about 76–86cm/30–34″ from the tabletop to the bottom of the tassels; in a bedroom on a 2.4m/8 ft ceiling it can sit higher and still read.
Will the tassels look flat out of the box?
They may. Cotton tassels are packed compressed for shipping, so hang the fixture first and give the strands a few days to drop. Separating them with your fingers speeds it up — avoid combing or brushing, which frays the cotton.
