The Vellora Wall Sconce is a lantern hung on a hook by a farmhouse door. A short metal arm leaves a round plate, bends down at the tip like a coat hook, and from it a black cord drops to a glass shade with a wooden socket cap, the way an oil lantern hangs from its bail. The shade is pressed glass in the old dime-store patterns: a ribbed amber drum, a scalloped amber flower bowl, or a fluted green cone, each with the ribs molded into the glass so the light breaks into stripes. Because the shade hangs on a cord rather than sitting on the arm, it swings a little when a door closes, which is exactly what a lantern on a hook would do.
