Inspiration

A wide shallow cone is the most efficient shape there is for lighting a table — it pushes light out to the edges instead of dropping it in the middle. Left plain at this diameter, though, it reads like a dish. Pleating the fabric solves that: the folds break the surface into fine vertical lines, so the eye follows the radius outward and a 31″ shade stays light on its feet. Everything gathers into one brass ring at the top.

Which diameter suits my table?

Aim for a shade roughly half to two-thirds the width of the table. The 19.7″ suits tables around 30–36″ wide, the 23.6″ around 36–44″, and the 31.5″ needs a wide table, a long island, or a room with the ceiling height to carry it — in a standard 8 ft room it will dominate. On a long rectangular table, two of the smaller sizes often read better than one large.

Is one bulb enough for a dining table?

For dining, yes — the cone spreads a single bulb across the surface, which is why this shape works at these diameters. But the socket is capped at 40W, so treat it as ambient light: on a working kitchen island, or on the 31.5″ size where the same output covers more area, pair it with recessed or under-cabinet lighting rather than expecting it to carry prep work on its own.

How do I clean pleated fabric?

Work along the folds, not across them — brushing sideways flattens the pleats over time. A soft brush or a vacuum dusting attachment on low setting is enough for the dust that collects on the upper face, which is where it shows first on a wide cone. Don't use water or fabric cleaners; a damp cloth leaves rings on the pleat edges.
