Inspiration

The Calveris Floor Lamp started from a reading chair that sat too far from any table. A lamp standing beside it always put the light behind the shoulder, which is the one place it is no use; what was wanted was a lamp that could stand clear of the chair and lean its head out over it instead. So the post stays upright and a long arm swings off the top, the way a boom lamp does, with a wood grip at the joint to set the angle by hand. The shade stayed the pleated, scallop-hemmed kind from an old parlor table lamp rather than anything that looks like equipment. The wood at the foot and the joint was chosen to sit next to a chair, not beside a desk.

Where should it stand next to a chair?

Set the base just behind or beside the arm of the chair and swing the arm across, so the shade ends up over your shoulder rather than in front of your face. With a 73cm/28.7″ arm the post can sit well clear of the seat — and because the base is Dia 25cm/9.8″, keep the arm pointing toward the chair rather than out into open floor, and out of a walkway.

Is it tall enough to read by?

At 157cm/61.8″ overall, the shade sits above the head of a seated adult, which is where a reading lamp wants to be — light falls onto the page instead of into your eyes. Beside a sofa it lands roughly 80–90cm/32–35″ above the seat cushion.
