Inspiration

Reach costs weight. An arm that swings three feet out from its pole has to be answered at the bottom, and the Rosso makes no attempt to hide that: the counterweight is a ribbed aluminium disc sitting flat on the floor, machined rather than dressed up. What softens the engineering is the pole — solid white ash instead of the black tube this kind of lamp usually gets, so the mechanism reads as furniture rather than equipment.

FAQ

How far does the arm reach, and will it hold position?

Roughly 39″ of horizontal reach with both sections extended — enough to clear the back of a sofa and sit the shade over a seated reader. The two electroplated knuckles are friction joints: tighten them once for the angle you want and the arm holds under the shade's weight. If it starts to creep over time, the fix is a quarter-turn on the knuckle, not a replacement part.

Will it tip when the arm is fully out?

Not on a firm floor — the 13″ cast base is weighted for exactly that condition. What causes trouble is soft footing: on a thick or uneven rug the disc can rock as the arm swings, so on deep pile it's worth sliding a hard board under the base or shifting the lamp onto the floor edge. And don't hang anything from the shade, which changes the balance the base was designed around.

Which shade colour should I choose?

Cream disappears into a neutral room and is the choice if the lamp shouldn't be the subject. Lemon Yellow, Cobalt, and Vermillion work the opposite way — a single block of colour against pale walls and wood, which is what the shape was drawn for. Black sits in between: clearly visible in silhouette, but quiet, and it pairs cleanly with black window frames, leather, and dark hardware.
