Inspiration

A scallop is usually a finishing move — put on the bottom hem of a shade and forgotten. The Bellune runs it along the top rim as well, so the drum has no straight edge anywhere: the outline waves where it meets the ceiling and again where the light leaves. The reference is a porcelain plate rim rather than dressmaking, which is why the curves are shallow and even rather than frilled.

Two-tier or single?

Mostly a ceiling-height decision. The two-tier runs 2–4″ taller at every diameter, which reads as a focal point under a 9 ft or higher ceiling and as clutter under 8 ft — especially over a table, where the extra height eats into the clearance you need above the surface. The single keeps the scallop detail without that cost, and is the safer choice in a nursery or bedroom where the fixture sits closer to head height.

Which diameter suits my table?

Aim for roughly half to two-thirds the table width. The 15.7″ suits a four-seat table or a round two-top, the 19.7″ a standard six-seat, and the 23.6″ an eight-seat table or a two-storey entry. In a nursery or powder room, go a size smaller than the room seems to allow — the scallop reads better slightly under-scaled than filling the ceiling.

How do I keep a cream shade clean?

Most discoloration on a pale shade is dust rather than staining, so a regular pass with a soft brush or a vacuum upholstery tool on low does most of the work. For a mark, dab with a barely damp white cloth and let it dry fully instead of rubbing — water rings on cream fabric are harder to fix than the original mark. Test on an inside seam first, and kill the circuit at the breaker before working near the fixture.
