The 22N follows the paper lantern tradition it comes from: a light you build out of nothing but paper stretched over a frame, then light from inside. The washi is laid over a ribbed structure so the light passes through the sheet rather than off it, and every rib shows as a soft line across the surface. At 24.4 inches tall the shade is wide enough to read as a form in the room, not an object on a table. Paper, a frame, one bulb — that's the whole thing.

This is the large end of the table-lamp range, so it needs a surface with room — a console, sideboard, wide side table, or a low table beside a sofa. On a narrow nightstand it will dominate; a floor-level plinth or stack of books also works if you want it low in a corner. The paper spreads the light wide and soft, which makes it ambient light for a living room or bedroom rather than a reading lamp — add a task light where you need to see detail. Washi paper is thin, strong, and slightly translucent — which is exactly what a good shade needs. Light passes through the fiber instead of bouncing off it, so the glow lands soft and even. Every shade is hand-shaped over a wire frame, which means no two are identical. The small variations on the surface aren't defects — they're the difference between a handmade lantern and a printed one.
Washi, traditional Japanese paper, is crafted from the inner barks of plants like kozo, mitsumata, and gampi. The process involves carefully stripping, boiling, and pounding the fibers into pulp, which is then spread onto bamboo mesh to form delicate sheets. I bought two lamps and both are absolutely beautiful. Gives our bedroom the beach vibe I was looking for. They were very easy to assembleshades and lamps in perfect condition.
This is a stunning Japanese-style lamp. I actually love it. However, it is a bit tricky to assemble. This is made with real rice paper so you must use caution when putting it together. Its important to be mindful the rice paper can tear if not handled properly. Once assembled, it looks beautiful. It gives a soft light, and stylish glow to the room.
Great lamp. Very attractive. I ended up going with a different lamp that looked better in my space, but would have kept this lamp if I had another spot for it!
