Inspiration

The Bravelle Table Lamp is a draftsman's desk lamp with a seashell for a hood. The arm is a single bent rod of brushed metal that rises from the back of the base, turns a corner, and reaches forward and down over the desk, the plain angled arm of the lamps that stood on drawing boards in the 1950s. Instead of a metal hood it carries a shade of capiz shell, thin translucent plates overlapped like fish scales, in one of two shapes: a tapered cone, or a rounded half-dome like a shell cupped in the hand. The base is a flat disc of dark-stained oak, the shape of a hockey puck. Lit, the shell turns pearl-white and every overlap shows as a soft line.

FAQ

Cone or Dome?
The Cone is open at the bottom and drops a wider pool onto a desk; the Dome wraps the bulb more closely and glows softer, better beside a bed. Arm, base and bulb are the same on both.
Is it bright enough for a desk?
Yes. The 24W bulb sits under a shade tilted forward, so light lands on the work surface about 30cm/12″ in front of the base. Good for reading and writing; the shell keeps it from glaring.
Why does the shell look uneven?
Capiz is natural shell: plate size, thickness and tint vary and the overlaps fall differently on every shade. That is the material, not a defect.
Can I change the bulb?
Yes. The socket is E26 or E27; unscrew the bulb from under the shade and keep to LED so the shell stays cool.
