Inspiration

The Caldren Pendant Lamp is a handbell hung on a cord. The shade keeps the shape of a small bronze bell, a flared skirt with a rolled lip, but it is built up from squares of natural shell laid edge to edge like a mosaic, so the surface is a grid of thin, pearly tiles instead of cast metal. Where a bell would have its wooden handle there is a rough ball of travertine, the pitted yellow stone of Roman paving, and the cable runs up from it to a plain iron canopy. When the bulb is on, the shell tiles light up one by one, each a slightly different shade of cream, and the grout lines between them stay dark.

How many do I need over a kitchen island?
The shade is only 15cm/5.9″ wide, so hang them in a row of three over a 1.8–2.4m/6–8 ft island, about 60–75cm/24–30″ apart, with the bottom of the shade 75–85cm/30–34″ above the counter.
Where does the light go?
The bell is open at the bottom, so most light drops straight down onto the surface, while the shell tiles glow softly from the side. Good for a table or counter, not a whole-room light.
Can I shorten the cord?
Yes. The 150cm/59″ cable is cut to length inside the canopy during installation; leave it long over a table, short over a bedside.
Why do the tiles look uneven?
The shade is set with natural shell, so tile color and thickness vary from piece to piece; the travertine ball is also natural stone with its own pits. No two pendants match exactly.
