La Raphia est née d'une pile d'échantillons d'abat-jour laissée sur un établi, le plus grand en bas et chacun un peu plus étroit que le précédent. Regardée comme un seul objet, la pile avait un rythme qu'aucun abat-jour seul ne pouvait produire, et c'est pourquoi il a été conservé : trois ou cinq tambours en tissu descendant progressivement, enfilés sur une tige en bois tourné qui traverse toute la hauteur. La lumière sort de chaque niveau à un diamètre différent, ce qui fait que la lueur s'étage plutôt que d'arriver tout d'un coup.
