De Raphia ontstond uit een stapel lampenkapmonsters die op een werkbank lagen — de grootste onderaan, elk exemplaar stap voor stap smaller. Als één object gelezen had de stapel een ritme dat geen enkele losse kap kon bieden, dus werd het idee behouden: drie of vijf stoffen trommels die naar binnen stappen, geregen op een gedraaide houten staaf die de volledige hoogte beslaat. Licht verlaat elke laag onder een ander middellijn, waardoor de gloed zich in lagen verspreidt in plaats van ineens op te flitsen.
