Kikyo draws on Japanese folk pottery, where indigo was brushed onto everyday stoneware — bowls, cups, small plates — in marks that read as pattern rather than picture. The shade keeps the plainest form in that family, a shallow cone, so the glaze does the work: a chrysanthemum, a run of brushstrokes, dots, leaves, or thin stripes, closed off with a brown rim the way a potter finishes an edge. Each one is painted by hand, which is why no two shades match exactly.
