Dia, W, H, drop, projection — the same letters describe different parts on every fixture. A pendant listed as Dia 21.5 × H 24 cm is not necessarily going to hang only 24 cm below the ceiling. A wall lamp listed as W 12 cm may still project far enough into a narrow hallway to become a problem.
The numbers on a lighting product page are useful only when you know which part of the fixture they describe. Here's how to read them correctly before you order.
For a pendant light, think of the fixture as three separate sections, from the ceiling down:

"H 24 cm" describes the body of the pendant — not where the bottom of the installed light will sit.

Dia, Ø or Diameter usually describes a circular part of the fixture, but it does not automatically mean the base.
When you see a diameter, ask: which part of the lamp looks widest? Then check the dimension diagram to see whether it refers to the shade, globe, base or widest overall point. A 30 cm shade does not mean the base occupies 30 cm of tabletop.
Overall diameter tells you how wide the lamp appears. Base diameter tells you how much surface it occupies.

Fixtures that are not circular are more likely to use W for width. For a wall lamp, width tells you how much horizontal wall area the fixture occupies when viewed from the front — but it does not tell you how much room the fixture takes up. A narrow wall lamp can still extend surprisingly far into the room.
Projection, sometimes called depth, is the distance from the wall to the outermost part of the fixture — one of the easiest wall-light measurements to overlook.

Imagine two wall lights:
The first one looks narrower from the front, but it takes up much more usable space as you walk past it.
Height seems straightforward on a table or floor lamp — H 28 cm or H 170 cm usually describes the overall vertical height. Pendant lights are different: a pendant may have fixture height, cord or rod length, canopy height, and total installed drop, and those numbers should not be combined mentally unless the diagram makes the relationship clear.
Return to the Jingvale example — the 24 cm tells you how tall the visible pendant body is; the 150 cm tells you how much suspension length is available for adjustment. Neither number alone tells you exactly where the bottom of the lamp will sit — that depends on how much of the adjustable cord you actually use.
A long adjustable cord represents flexibility — it does not mean the entire length must be used. Projection deserves particular attention beside circulation paths, near doors, or anywhere furniture sits close to a wall. When reading wall-light dimensions, don't stop at W × H — look for width, height and projection.
"Drop" usually describes a vertical hanging distance, but the starting and ending points are not always identical from one product drawing to another. It may describe:
So when a product says Adjustable drop: 59 in, don't assume the lowest point of the lamp sits exactly 59 inches below the ceiling. Look at the diagram — where does the dimension line begin, and where does it end? If the 59 inches refers only to the cord, the height of the fixture body still exists below it.

The canopy is the plate that sits against the ceiling and covers the electrical connection. For the Jingvale Pendant, the fixture is about 21.5 cm in diameter, while the ceiling canopy is about 10 cm — both use Dia, but describe completely different parts of the light. A small canopy can support a much wider shade, so always check which part each diameter refers to.
Canopy diameter is not pendant diameter.

A 150 cm cord does not make a pendant 150 cm tall — it tells you how much suspension length is available. For plug-in pendants, cord length becomes a different problem again, since the cord may need to travel from the outlet, up the wall and across the ceiling before reaching the hanging point.
Not every lamp should be evaluated by the same first measurement.
A wide shade and a wide base are not the same problem.
For an arc lamp, also check horizontal reach — a compact base doesn't mean the shade stays above it.
In a tight location, projection may matter more than front-facing width.
Separates the visible lamp from the hardware that determines where it actually hangs.

A tape measure, painter's tape and a piece of string are usually enough.
A fixture can technically fit inside the available dimensions and still feel too large or too small.
