    The Akari Series

Handcrafted paper. A warmer kind of light.

Washi paper, thin wire, and a warm diffused glow — no hotspots, no glare.

A sculptural piece by day, a quiet layer of ambient light by night. One lantern is often all a room needs.

    Why Akari

Why the Akari Series feels different

Four reasons these lanterns keep showing up in homes that take lighting seriously.

    Soft, diffused glow

Washi paper filters light into a warm wash. No harsh hotspots, no cold edges — just gentle ambient light across the whole room.

    Handcrafted paper texture

Every shade is shaped and pressed by hand. Fiber lines, soft folds, and small irregularities you can actually see when it's lit.

    Sculptural, nearly weightless

Strong silhouette, light visual footprint. Real presence in a room without crowding what's already there.

    Styles with anything

Warm enough for mid-century, quiet enough for minimalist, soft enough to anchor a modern dining table.

    Craft & Material

Paper that was made to hold light

Washi paper is thin, strong, and slightly translucent — which is exactly what a good shade needs. Light passes through the fiber instead of bouncing off it, so the glow lands soft and even. Every shade is hand-shaped over a wire frame, which means no two are identical. The small variations on the surface aren't defects — they're the difference between a handmade lantern and a printed one.

    Heritage

The Art of Xuan Paper Making: A Thousand Years of Craftsmanship

Washi, traditional Japanese paper, is crafted from the inner barks of plants like kozo, mitsumata, and gampi. The process involves carefully stripping, boiling, and pounding the fibers into pulp, which is then spread onto bamboo mesh to form delicate sheets. Known for its strength, translucency, and soft texture, washi has been a vital part of Japanese culture for centuries — seen in origami, lanterns, and sliding doors, embodying the nation's enduring artistry and grace.

    Room by Room

    Where Akari lights belong

These aren't fixtures you hide. They're pieces you place — and every room has a spot that opens up with one of them in it.

Akari pendant above a dining table

    Over the dining table

Hang a pendant low. The paper warms the room the moment you switch it on — the kind of light people stay under longer.

Akari floor lamp in a calm bedroom corner

    In the bedroom

A floor lantern in the corner replaces the overhead. Walls soften, the room calms, and the last hour of the day feels slower.

Akari floor lamp beside a reading chair

    Living room & reading corner

Tall beside a chair, low on a side table — ambient light that fills the room without pulling attention away.

    See It Light Up

    Watch the light come on

Every lantern fills a room differently. See how the light settles in, from first switch to full glow.

    What owners are saying

    ★★★★★

"Bought the floor lantern for our bedroom and it completely changed the evening vibe. We never turn the overhead on anymore. Warm, but not yellow — if that makes sense."

    ★★★★★

"I was looking for a dining pendant that didn't feel cold or too 'designer.' This one actually pulls the table together. Guests always ask where it's from."

    Mark T.

    Interior Lover · Verified

    ★★★★★

"The paper texture is better in person than in photos — you can see the fiber when it's lit. Arrived well-packed and easy to assemble."
