See It In Action

The Akari D Series Pendant Lamp produces a quality of light that most fixtures never attempt. The Japanese Washi paper — translucent, fibrous, quietly irregular — diffuses the bulb inside into something that feels less like electricity and more like natural light arriving from no specific direction. The room softens. The ceiling recedes. Whatever is below the lamp becomes the only thing in the space.

An icon of mid-century Japanese modernism, renewed in five sizes for rooms that deserve something this considered.

Why Washi Paper — and What It Does to Light Washi is a handmade Japanese paper produced from long plant fibers — mulberry, bamboo, or hemp — that give it a natural translucency and a subtle texture visible when the lamp is lit. Unlike synthetic diffusers, Washi doesn't produce a uniform flat glow: the fiber distribution creates micro-variations across the surface that shift slightly as you move around the lamp. The result is a light that feels alive in a way that plastic and acrylic shades don't approach.
What Akari D Does
🌕 Washi Paper Diffusion The paper's natural fiber structure distributes the bulb's output across its entire surface without any visible source — a soft, even glow that feels proportionally larger than the lamp's physical size suggests.
🌾 Iron Wire Armature The underlying structure is iron wire — a framework that holds the paper in shape without adding visual weight. From below, the lamp reads as almost entirely paper: light, organic, and impossibly resolved.
🔆 Dimmer Compatible At full brightness, the Washi glows with a clean warmth that fills a room. Dimmed low, it becomes something closer to a lantern — intimate, quiet, present. Pair with a dimmer switch (sold separately) for the complete range.
📐 Five Sizes From 45 cm to 120 cm across — the same form, the same quality of light, scaled to the room that needs it. A single lamp over a small reading corner or a 120 cm sphere anchoring an open-plan living space: both work.

Why Akari

Why the Akari Series feels different

Four reasons these lanterns keep showing up in homes that take lighting seriously.

Soft, diffused glow

Washi paper filters light into a warm wash. No harsh hotspots, no cold edges — just gentle ambient light across the whole room.

Handcrafted paper texture

Every shade is shaped and pressed by hand. Fiber lines, soft folds, and small irregularities you can actually see when it's lit.

Sculptural, nearly weightless

Strong silhouette, light visual footprint. Real presence in a room without crowding what's already there.

Styles with anything

Warm enough for mid-century, quiet enough for minimalist, soft enough to anchor a modern dining table.

Craft & Material

Paper that was made to hold light

Washi paper is thin, strong, and slightly translucent — which is exactly what a good shade needs. Light passes through the fiber instead of bouncing off it, so the glow lands soft and even. Every shade is hand-shaped over a wire frame, which means no two are identical. The small variations on the surface aren't defects — they're the difference between a handmade lantern and a printed one.

Heritage

The Art of Xuan Paper Making: A Thousand Years of Craftsmanship

Washi, traditional Japanese paper, is crafted from the inner barks of plants like kozo, mitsumata, and gampi. The process involves carefully stripping, boiling, and pounding the fibers into pulp, which is then spread onto bamboo mesh to form delicate sheets. Known for its strength, translucency, and soft texture, washi has been a vital part of Japanese culture for centuries — seen in origami, lanterns, and sliding doors, embodying the nation's enduring artistry and grace.

Where Akari lights belong

These aren't fixtures you hide. They're pieces you place — and every room has a spot that opens up with one of them in it.

Over the dining table

Hang a pendant low. The paper warms the room the moment you switch it on — the kind of light people stay under longer.

In the bedroom

A floor lantern in the corner replaces the overhead. Walls soften, the room calms, and the last hour of the day feels slower.

Every lantern fills a room differently. See how the light settles in, from first switch to full glow.

From Owners

What owners are saying

★★★★★

"Bought the floor lantern for our bedroom and it completely changed the evening vibe. We never turn the overhead on anymore. Warm, but not yellow — if that makes sense."

★★★★★

"I was looking for a dining pendant that didn't feel cold or too 'designer.' This one actually pulls the table together. Guests always ask where it's from."

Mark T.

Interior Lover · Verified

★★★★★

"The paper texture is better in person than in photos — you can see the fiber when it's lit. Arrived well-packed and easy to assemble."
